Parent-Involved Child Therapy in New York, New Jersey & Florida

Virtual and in-person therapy for children ages 6-12

Helping children build emotional skills—with parents supported every step of the way.

When your child is struggling, it can be difficult to know how to help.

Maybe you've noticed more anxiety, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, frustration, or difficulty handling everyday situations. You may have tried different approaches, but you're still unsure what your child needs—or how to respond when things become difficult.

Parent-involved child therapy provides your child with their own therapeutic space while making you an active and supported part of the treatment process.

Because therapy doesn't end when the session ends. What happens at home matters, too.

Your child's behavior is communicating something.

Children don't always have the words to tell us when they're anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated, or struggling.

Sometimes emotional distress shows up as:

  • Frequent tantrums or meltdowns

  • Irritability or frustration

  • Excessive worry or reassurance-seeking

  • Trouble separating from parents

  • Difficulty adjusting to transitions or change

  • Low self-esteem or self-confidence

  • Social difficulties with peers

  • School-related stress

  • Withdrawal or changes in behavior

Rather than focusing only on stopping a behavior, therapy can help us understand what is underneath it.

We'll work to understand your child's emotional experience while helping both you and your child develop more effective ways of responding to challenges.

What is parent-involved child therapy?

Parent-involved child therapy is a clinical approach that combines individual therapeutic support for your child with active parent involvement.

Your child has a space where they can build trust, explore their emotions, and develop skills with their therapist.

You, as the parent, have a space to better understand what your child may be experiencing and learn how to support their progress outside of therapy.

Depending on your child's age, needs, and treatment goals, parent involvement may include:

  • Parent and child dyadic sessions

  • Separate parent sessions

  • Collaborative treatment planning

  • Discussion of patterns you're noticing at home

  • Learning strategies to support emotional regulation

  • Practicing ways to respond to challenging situations

  • Identifying ways to reinforce skills between sessions

Your child deserves a therapeutic relationship that feels like their own—and you deserve to feel supported in your role as their parent.

What to expect

Child therapy sessions are typically 45-minutes, though may span 60-minutes if needed.

For younger children (ages 6-9) in-person therapy at my Brooklyn Heights office located in New York City is recommended.

For children ages 10-12, telehealth or in-person therapy are both options.

Clinical Interventions

I take an integrative approach and in my work with children I typically combine Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Somatic Experiencing interventions.

What we may work on together

Depending on your child's needs, therapy may focus on:

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • Emotional regulation

  • Low self-esteem

  • Perfectionism

  • Frustration tolerance

  • Behavioral challenges

  • Making and maintaining friends

  • Academic stress

  • Life transitions and adjustment

  • Family or relationship stress

  • Improving communication and emotional expression

You don't have to figure out how to help your child alone.

As a parent, it can be difficult to watch your child struggle and not know what to do.

Parent-involved therapy gives your child a supportive space to grow while giving you support, understanding, and practical tools along the way.

If you're wondering whether therapy could help your child, I'd love to hear more about what you've been noticing.
